After designing a restaurateur’s newest restaurant, he approached us to do a renovation and addition to his family home. The program was simple: add a complete master suite, modern kitchen, and entertainment space both inside the house and outside. They wanted the public side of the house’s character to remain, but the private side of the house to reflect a more modern style. This concept of public traditional and private modern style translated into the organization of the spaces for the home. We utilized the utilitarian spaces of a home to separate the private spaces from the public spaces. This helps create a physical buffer that becomes a spine for the home. After this spine was developed, we created portals through it, creating a code for how the two types of spaces interact with the spine.
The front of the house addition replicates the stone on the fireplace and the form of the house to keep with the traditional character, but still signifies the addition as new. The private area addition is classic modern with a focus on connecting the outside with the interior as seamlessly as possible
