The client wanted a home that blended the outdoor with the indoor. The program, as outlined, was for a rather large house. The site was a beautiful, heavily wooded lot with a steady slope from front to back. All of these conditions led to an approach where we developed pods with individual functions that could be sited around the trees and along the slope. This same approach made it possible that we could create negative spaces by arranging the pods around elements on the site. By doing this, we were able to double the program space by creating outdoor rooms that flowed directly from the indoors. After locating the pods on the site at different elevations and around elements, we introduced glass connectors. These helped reduce the scale of the overall building and helped create individual identities for each pod.
