Designing a small local office for a wind energy company on a tight budget could be a straightforward project, and with a tenant finish out there is not always a lot of opportunities for big architectural statements. However, this unique client wanted more than just a simple office space with cubicles. They wanted spaces that could be easily changed and transformed to the function of the day. One day, they needed the office to function as a typical engineering office; the next, they needed to have lay down space for large-scale maps.
With that in mind, we developed wall types that are semitransparent and furniture that can be easily moved to work as desks, map storage, or giant laydown tables. We developed a concept where the front desk volume is integrated with the entry from the public corridor, creating a presence from the nondescript corridor. We used simple millwork-grade plywood to create sculptural forms to invite visitors into their space. This simple use of materials is carried throughout the space. We utilized exposed wood framing, recycled newspaper, and translucent fiberglass panels to create a unique and flexible space.
